Gallagher Statement on State of the Union

March 7, 2024

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) released the following statement in response to President Biden's State of the Union address.

"President Biden said that the state of the union is strong and getting stronger, yet seventy percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction. In the last three years, Americans have suffered from record-high inflation, millions of illegal immigrants have crossed at the southern border, and we have witnessed one foreign policy disaster after the next.

"Unfortunately, the president’s speech was divisive and doubled down on the radical policies that created these crises. He started by attacking his predecessor and current election opponent, which was weird. He claimed he does not have the resources to secure the southern border, yet is actively using US resources to construct a port in Gaza, gifting Hamas and Iran a new access point to further abuse humanitarian assistance and deliver and distribute weapons. And it gives me no joy to say this, but his performance yet again revealed that he (a member of the Silent Generation) is much too old to be president.

"Finally, this was my eighth and final State of the Union. These speeches are far too long, with too many standing ovations, and too many disparate ideas unconnected by a coherent, interesting argument. It is time to return to a written State of the Union or a speech that is less than 20 minutes."
