Gallagher Secures Bipartisan Tax Relief for Wisconsinites

January 31, 2024

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) today released the following statement after voting for the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. The bill, which passed in overwhelming bipartisan fashion, extends key research and development provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and makes critical changes to the Child Tax Credit by ending the penalty on large and growing families. The package also included a number of provisions recommended by the Select Committee on the CCP that strengthen our relationship with Taiwan and help us compete with China.

"This package supports thousands of Wisconsin jobs and the innovation of Wisconsin businesses. It also includes important bipartisan recommendations from the Select Committee on the CCP’s recent report that would strengthen our relationship with Taiwan by eliminating double taxation and boost our R&D competitiveness with China. It also practically pays for itself by eliminating a COVID-era tax benefit that has been riddled with fraud and abuse. It’s a bipartisan, pro-growth compromise that, while imperfect, supports American innovation, creates jobs, and delivers critical relief to American workers, families, and small businesses.”

According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the bill pays for itself by also eliminating the COVID-era Employee Retention Credit.
