Gallagher, Huizenga, Thompson, and Thanedar Introduce Bill to Create United States-India Interparliamentary Group
Gallagher leads bipartisan effort to strengthen cooperation between the U.S. and India
Washington, D.C. – Congressman James Gallagher (CA‑01) introduced the United States–India Interparliamentary Group Act, a bipartisan bill establishing a formal forum for sustained engagement between the U.S. Congress and the Parliament of India. Gallagher, joined by House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee Chairman Bill Huizenga (MI‑04), Congressman Mike Thompson (CA‑04), and Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI‑13), underscored the importance of deepening cooperation with the world’s largest democracy across economic, security, and technological domains.
The legislation creates a structured, congressional‑level dialogue to advance shared interests, strengthen democratic institutions, and expand collaboration in areas including trade, critical and emerging technologies, defense, agriculture, and people‑to‑people ties. The group will serve as an official channel for lawmakers in both nations to exchange perspectives, identify opportunities for partnership, and address challenges facing the bilateral relationship.
“India is one of America’s most consequential partners, and our relationship will only grow more important in the decades ahead”, said Congressman Gallagher (CA-01). “Establishing a formal interparliamentary group ensures Congress plays a proactive role in strengthening this partnership, advancing shared democratic values, and expanding cooperation in critical areas like agriculture, specifically California wine and walnuts, technology, defense, and trade. I’m proud to lead this bipartisan effort.”
“As Chairman of the South and Central Asia Subcommittee, I see the US-India relationship—rooted in a common vision of a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific—as a defining moment of the 21st century. I’m proud to co-lead the United States-India Interparliamentary Group Act with Congressman Gallagher to further strengthen ties with the world’s largest democracy,” said Chairman Huizenga.
"I am glad to join Rep. Gallagher on legislation to establish the U.S.-India Interparliamentary Group to ensure that there is a permanent forum to strengthen ties, resolve issues, and partner on issues of mutual benefit. Strengthening our relationships with India is an opportunity to expand U.S. market access in India and support our California agriculture economy," said Congressman Thompson.
"The United States and India are natural partners that share democratic values and key economic and strategic interests. To further build this partnership, I'm proud to cosponsor the United States-India Interparliamentary Group Act to create a formal interparliamentary group between our two countries. I am grateful to Rep. Gallagher for his leadership on this issue and will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to strengthen this critical relationship," said Congressman Thanedar.
