Press Release

Washington, D.C. – In case you missed it, Rep. Gallagher delivered a speech on the House floor calling for action against the growing opioid and addiction crisis in Wisconsin and across the country.  Rep. Gallagher called for unity in combating the crisis, saying “It’s not a Republican or Democrat issue, it’s an American issue and one that should bring all of us together.”

Below is the full transcript of his speech:

“Mr. Speaker: Communities in Northeast Wisconsin and across this country are in the midst of a public health crisis—and it’s not a Republican or Democrat issue, it’s an American issue and one that should bring all of us together. Opioid abuse is wreaking havoc on our homes, our schools and our churches. Its devastating effects are destroying our families and the lives of our loved ones.

To put the problem into perspective: More Americans will have died from drug overdoses in 2017 than there are names on the Vietnam War Memorial. That’s alarming.

As a Marine veteran, I’m acutely aware that servicemembers are more susceptible than the average person to addiction. In fact, veterans die from accidental drug overdoses at a 33% higher rate than the rest of the population. Something must be done to reverse this awful trend.

I commend our state lawmakers in Wisconsin who are doing aggressive work on this front, and I commend everyone who is doing this work at the national level.

Headline after headline reminds us of the tragic loss of life that has resulted from our nation’s growing opioid and addiction crisis. We have to step up. We have to take action.

Mr. Speaker, I yield the balance of my time.”
