Gallagher Urges Senate to Pass Bill Authorizing GWOT Memorial on Mall

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) yesterday joined members of Congress, representatives from the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) Foundation, representatives from the Wounded Warrior Project, gold star families, and veterans of the GWOT in calling on the Senate to pass legislation that would authorize construction of a GWOT Memorial on the National Mall. The bill, which was introduced in the House by Reps. Gallagher and Jason Crow (D-CO), passed the House on September 23, 2021. It is currently waiting for a vote in the Senate.

"For twenty years, veterans of the Global War on Terror have fought hard to keep our country safe. The House has taken important steps to ensure their service is properly honored on the National Mall, but one final step remains. Now is the time for the Senate to follow the House's lead and get this done,"said Rep. Gallagher.

During the 115th Congress, Rep. Gallagher led an effort to authorize a GWOT Memorial, but additional legislation is required to allow for the memorial to be constructed on the National Mall. Gallagher and Crow have worked for years to highlight the importance of building the memorial on the National Mall and pass legislation that would allow this to happen.

"Congressman Gallagher has truly helped lead the charge to build the Global War on Terrorism Memorial at a centrally located spot near the existing war memorials on the National Mall, and for that, I want to thank him,"Wounded Warrior Project CEO Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Mike Linnington said.

Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) introduced companion legislation in the Senate. 49 Senators currently co-sponsor the bill.
