Gallagher’s Statement on U.S. Withdrawal from Iran Deal

May 8, 2018
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today Rep. Mike Gallagher released the following statement on President Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the JCPOA:

“The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was a bad deal that left Iran as a nuclear threshold state with a stamp of international approval, offered permanent concessions for temporary restrictions, ignored the possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program, and undermined the Nonproliferation Treaty and Six UN Security Council Resolutions. Going forward we must work to apply maximum pressure on Iran until it agrees to verifiably and irreversibly dismantle its illicit nuclear infrastructure, fully disclose the extent of its program to the IAEA and allow for comprehensive inspections, and stop its development of ballistic missiles and destabilizing regional activity. Additionally, this short-lived agreement between the previous administration and Iran’s Supreme Leader should serve as a reminder that, in order to stand the test of time and out of respect for the Constitution, comprehensive arms treaties should be submitted to Congress for ratification.”
