Press Release

Rep. Mike Gallagher today received the PROMISE (Protecting Our Most Important Students Early) Award from the National Head Start Association (NHSA) for his leadership in promoting trauma informed care (TIC). The PROMISE Award is given to members of Congress who have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to Head Start and to serving our nation’s most vulnerable children and their families, not only in their districts, but across the nation. This year’s PROMISE Awards were presented to members of Congress who have led the charge in supporting Head Start’s work to address childhood trauma.

In Wisconsin, we’ve seen firsthand how a trauma informed approach can positively impact lives,” said Rep. Gallagher.Childhood trauma affects millions across the country, and it’s important that we take leadership at the federal level to ensure individuals with these experiences receive the time and resources they need to heal. It’s an honor to receive the PROMISE Award, and I look forward to continue working with my colleagues to find ways we can help those who have experienced trauma in our community.

Head Start children and families are grateful for Rep. Gallagher’s support and thank him for keeping the commitment to Head Start in both his words and his deeds,” said NHSA’s Executive Director Yasmina Vinci. “For 55 years, Head Start has been partnering with vulnerable children and families on their paths to success, and our impact would not be possible without the steadfast support of our long-standing allies in Congress.”

Background:

Since coming to Congress, Rep. Gallagher has championed TIC at the federal level. Last Congress, he led an effort to pass H. Res. 443, and helped secure a number of TIC provisions in the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act. Rep. Gallagher additionally introduced the RISE from Trauma Act last June to support children exposed to trauma, and was a founding member of the TIC Caucus in the House.
