Gallagher Announces Grants That Help Local Law Enforcement Address Crime from Illegal Immigrants
GREEN BAY, WI -- Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) today announced that six counties in Wisconsin's Eighth Congressional District received grants to offset costs from responding to illegal immigration in Northeast Wisconsin.
"The crisis on our southern border isn't just a problem for southern border states," said Rep. Gallagher. "Here in Northeast Wisconsin, the border crisis has contributed to an increase in crime and drug trafficking that drain resources and strain local police departments. These grants help ensure local law enforcement departments are compensated for the Biden administration's inability to secure our southern border."
The grants come from the Department of Homeland Security's State Criminal Alien Assistance Program and reimburse localities for costs they have incurred from incarcerating illegal immigrants who committed crimes, ensuring a department's limited resources are not wasted as a result of the Biden administration's failure to secure the border.
"I want to thank Representative Mike Gallagher for helping Brown County taxpayers by supporting the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). This program allows local Sheriff's Offices to recoup costs related to the incarceration of undocumented criminal aliens who have been convicted of committing crimes in our communities,"said Sheriff Todd J. Delain, Brown County Sheriff.
"These funds are critical to the operating budget of our jail and without them, serious cuts would need to be made to the services we provide our inmates," said Sheriff John F. Matz, Winnebago County Sheriff.
Six counties in Northeast Wisconsin received a total of $137,759 from the SCAAP, including:
- Brown County: $50,235
- Outagamie County: $35,133
- Winnebago County: $21,705
- Calumet County: $19,540
- Door County: $7,713
- Shawano County: $3,433
