Press Release

Washington, D.C. – During his first full policy committee hearing on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) today, Congressman Mike Gallagher was a leading voice in discussing Iran’s nuclear program and safe zones in Sryia. General David Petraeus and John McLaughlin testified as witnesses, answering questions on key national security threats and challenges facing the U.S.

Read the questions Rep. Gallagher addressed to General Petaeus below:

“…The Iranians confirmed that they conducted another nuclear ballistic test. Ballistic missiles are wrongly, in my view, not covered in many ways under the purview of [the Iran] deal, although they are covered by multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions. How do you suggest we respond to something like that, and more broadly, can you talk about the difficulties in disaggregating Iran’s nuclear program, its missile program from other ways Iran advances its interests throughout the Middle Aast and throughout the world?”

“There’s been some talk about safe zones in Syria today. We heard that on the call with King Salman of Saudi Arabia the President discussed the use of safe zones in Syria and Yemen. Could you talk a bit more about the risks and rewards of going down that path right now, and what questions do we need to answer before we march forward with safe zones?”
